Serial Upskirter Receives 20-Month Sentence for Predatory Filming Spree in Soho
In a disturbing case highlighting the persistent threat of voyeurism in public spaces, a prolific upskirter has been jailed after targeting more than twenty women in a single evening. James Manchand, aged 62, was apprehended by plain-clothed officers in the bustling Soho district on January 16, where he was observed deliberately pacing along queues outside nightclubs and venues.
Calculated Predatory Behavior Uncovered by Vigilant Police
Officers on patrol noticed Manchand hovering suspiciously around groups of women, prompting them to intervene. Upon stopping him, they discovered twenty-nine explicit videos on his phone, featuring twenty different victims, all filmed that very evening. Manchand was arrested immediately at the scene, and following a swift investigation, he was sentenced to twenty months imprisonment this past Friday.
This sentencing comes with added gravity, as Manchand was already subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order due to a prior voyeurism offence. Detective Constable Sam Pearson, who led the investigation, emphasized the calculated and persistent nature of Manchand's actions, stating, "His predatory behaviour showed a complete disregard for the women he targeted. Thanks to the vigilance of our officers, we were able to intervene and recover clear evidence of multiple voyeurism offences in one night."
Met Police Condemn Voyeurism as Blatant Privacy Invasion
Commander Clair Kelland, the Metropolitan Police's public protection lead, underscored the intrusive essence of voyeurism, noting it often occurs in crowded places where victims may not immediately realize the violation. "There is absolutely no excuse for this behaviour, whether motivated by sexual gratification or a desire to cause distress," she asserted. "We urge bystanders to remain alert and report any predatory behavior to officers or venue staff promptly, as quick action can prevent further targeting."
