"Once people find community, they find more value and they’re able to feel less shame about their fetish because they have people who can relate," she explains. The fetish is enjoyed by men, women, and non-binary individuals, though Engle observes that men tend to discuss it more openly online.

Experts point to a combination of psychological and physiological factors driving the appeal. For some, it connects to power dynamics and vulnerability within BDSM. "A domme might force their sub to lick their armpit because it can be degrading," says Engle, stressing this always occurs between consenting adults.
