A woman has sustained serious injuries after leaping from the third floor of a flat in Lewisham to escape a rapidly spreading fire, which investigators believe was ignited by a charging e-bike battery. The incident occurred on Reculver Road, prompting an urgent response from emergency services.
Emergency Response and Injuries
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 11:14am, where they discovered part of the hallway engulfed in flames. The blaze was successfully brought under control by 11:45am, but not before the woman had jumped from the balcony as smoke filled the property. London Ambulance Service transported her to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the fall.
A man was also rescued from the flat and received on-site care for smoke inhalation. The London Fire Brigade confirmed that working smoke alarms alerted the occupants promptly, but the woman found herself trapped in a bedroom with smoke seeping in, forcing her to make the desperate decision to jump.
Cause of the Fire
The fire is attributed to the catastrophic failure of an e-bike battery that had been charging in the hallway for approximately 12 hours. This incident underscores growing concerns over the safety risks associated with lithium-ion batteries in personal mobility devices.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Prevention & Protection, Richard Field, emphasized the critical importance of maintaining clear escape routes. He stated, "This incident highlights why you should always ensure your escape route is clear and why we recommend to never charge your e-bike or e-scooter on your means of escape, such as a hallway or by your front door."
Field added that firefighters in London are now responding to fires involving e-bikes or e-scooters on average every other day, with a record 206 incidents reported last year. He expressed wishes for the woman's recovery, noting her serious injuries from the fall.

The London Fire Brigade is intensifying its #ChargeSafe campaign to prevent such tragedies. Key recommendations include using batteries from reputable sellers, avoiding mismatched chargers, and refraining from overcharging devices. Additionally, people are advised never to charge e-bikes or e-scooters unattended or while sleeping, and to ensure any conversions from pushbikes are performed by competent professionals.
