Police Launch New Appeal in 30-Year-Old Murder Case of Melanie Hall
Avon and Somerset Police are issuing a renewed appeal for information regarding the murder of Melanie Hall, a 25-year-old university graduate, nearly three decades after her disappearance. The case remains unsolved, with detectives urging the public to come forward with any details that could assist the investigation.
Details of the Disappearance and Discovery
Melanie Hall was last seen at Cadillacs nightclub on Walcot Street in Bath shortly after 1am on June 9, 1996. She was a clerical worker at the Royal United Hospital and was on a night out with friends when she vanished. Her remains were discovered 13 years later, on October 5, 2009, by workmen cutting grass near the junction 14 northbound slip road of the M5 motorway.
Detective Chief Inspector Ben Lavender, leading the investigation, emphasized the enduring pain of Hall's family, stating they have "endured unimaginable pain and uncertainty for almost three decades and have shown extraordinary strength and resilience throughout this time." As the 30th anniversary of her murder approaches, police are focusing on the busy weekend of her disappearance, which coincided with England playing Switzerland in the opening game of the Euros.
Key Points in the Investigation
Police believe there is a strong possibility that Hall left the nightclub with her killer, as a coat she had checked into the cloakroom was collected. However, she might have met the perpetrator outside or entered a vehicle. DCI Lavender noted that Bath city centre was "exceptionally busy" on June 8 and 9, 1996, increasing the likelihood of witnesses.
Officers are keeping an open mind about when Hall's body was dumped at the M5 junction 14 site, suggesting it could have occurred hours or days after her disappearance. They are seeking information from anyone who visited Cadillacs nightclub that night, saw suspicious activity or vehicles parked on the northbound slip road at Thornbury in the early hours of June 9 or subsequent weeks, or knows individuals from Bath with connections to that route.
Missing Items and Reward Offer
Several personal items belonging to Hall have never been recovered, including a pale blue silk dress, black suede shoes, cream jacket, black handbag, cosmetics, her Midland cheque book, bank card, and jewellery such as a Next watch with an expanding bracelet and silver drop earrings. Police are asking if anyone has seen these items or knows their whereabouts.
In a bid to encourage information, Crimestoppers has offered a reward of up to £20,000 for details leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Hall's murder. DCI Lavender urged the public: "If you have information or suspicions about anyone who could be connected to Melanie's disappearance, now is the time to let us know. Please let us decide if information is relevant to the investigation or not."
This appeal highlights the ongoing efforts to solve a long-standing cold case and bring closure to Hall's family, with police leveraging the anniversary to jog memories and gather new leads.
