The catastrophic flash flood in Nepal's Trishuli Valley, triggered by a glacier detachment, has left at least 275 Indians missing, including hydropower workers and pilgrims, while 149 have been rescued. The disaster, which occurred when a melting glacier slammed into the valley below, unleashing a cascade of rock and ice down the Bhote Kashi River, underscores the escalating climate risks facing the Himalayas.
Desperate Search and Missing Persons
Families from Mumbai to Kolkata are posting desperate pleas on social media, sharing photos and details of missing loved ones. Among the missing are workers of a hydropower project and pilgrims undertaking the Hindu pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet. Another 128 people of Indian origin, including a large group from Sadhguru's Isha Foundation, are also unaccounted for.
Gauri Joshi, whose five relatives were part of a pilgrim tour group from Maharashtra, described the last few days as a blur of calling their numbers in vain and watching rescue operations. Her relatives cleared immigration at the Gyirong border between Nepal and Tibet and boarded buses shortly before the flood waters destroyed the crossing. “Chances appear very bleak now. But maybe a miracle will happen,” Joshi said.
Expert Insights on Glacial Hazards
The tragedy has reignited questions about the Himalayas' vulnerability to climate change. Dr Ashim Sattar, a professor at Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar and an expert on glacial lake outburst floods, explained that the cryosphere—where water exists in solid form—poses multiple hazards. Glacial lakes, formed from melting glaciers, can outburst and cause damage downstream. Glacier ice detachments, like the one in Nepal, can lead to debris flows. Permafrost, which exists widely in the Himalayas, is also a hazard, though it is poorly monitored.
“With climate change, these grounds will go above zero degrees and will start to degrade. We might expect a higher frequency of debris flows in the future,” Sattar said. He emphasized that monitoring the vast Himalayan region is tricky, but necessary to understand how these hazards are conditioned.
Vulnerability and Preparedness in India
Sattar noted that direct evidence of climate impacts exists in the Indian Himalayas: glacial lakes are increasing in number, size, and volume, and glaciers are retreating. “The risk exists because it might happen any time,” he said. Every Himalayan state faces hazards, with eastern regions having many full-grown lakes near their limits, while western and central Himalayas have more scope for lake growth as glaciers retreat.
On disaster preparedness, Sattar praised the National Disaster Management Authority's proactive steps with the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) Risk Mitigation Programme to install early-warning systems. However, he stressed that early warning systems should be community-based. “It’s not always the scientist or the policymakers who can actually make this work at its full potential. We need to have local knowledge, involve the communities to make them more effective,” he said.
Prevention is possible but expensive, Sattar added, requiring significant intervention in high mountains. “We know that the mountains are changing and the hazard levels are increasing, so the only way forward is to minimise the exposure to the risk below,” he explained.
