London Man Faces Attempted Murder Charge Following Violent Attack on Police Officers
Police in London have charged a 43-year-old man with attempted murder following a disturbing incident in which three officers were attacked with axes and a large dog. The violent confrontation occurred on Sunday at a residential property on Marine Street in the Bermondsey area of South London.
Violent Confrontation Involving Dual Axes and Dangerous Dog
According to police reports, officers responding to a call at a flat in Marine Street were met with extreme violence. The suspect, identified as Stephen Coombes of Marine Street, Bermondsey, allegedly set his Cane Corso dog on the attending officers while simultaneously wielding axes in both hands.
The officers were forced to deploy a Taser to subdue the armed suspect, who was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The aggressive dog was immediately seized by authorities and transported to secure police kennels for assessment and containment.
Officer Injuries and Medical Treatment
Two of the three officers sustained significant injuries during the attack, suffering wounds from both the axe assault and the dog attack. Emergency medical services transported both injured officers to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Fortunately, medical professionals determined that neither officer's injuries were life-threatening or likely to result in permanent disability. Both officers have since been discharged from hospital and are recovering from their ordeal.
A third officer involved in the incident received only minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment or extensive medical intervention.
Multiple Charges Filed Against Suspect
Stephen Coombes now faces multiple serious charges in connection with the violent incident:
- Attempted murder of police officers
- Being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog that caused injury
- A racially aggravated Public Order Act offence
- Harassment with intent to cause fear of violence
The 43-year-old Bermondsey resident is scheduled to appear before Croydon Magistrates' Court on Monday to face these serious allegations. The case represents one of the more extreme examples of violence against police officers in recent London law enforcement history.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
London Metropolitan Police have emphasized their commitment to protecting officers from violence while performing their duties. The incident has prompted renewed discussions about officer safety protocols when responding to potentially dangerous situations.
Police authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the violent confrontation, including what prompted the initial police response to the Marine Street address and whether there were any prior warnings about the suspect or the dangerous dog.
The case highlights the increasing challenges faced by law enforcement personnel in urban environments, where they may encounter unexpected weapons and dangerous animals during routine responses.
