Community in Mourning After Birthday Party Tragedy

A peaceful family celebration turned into a scene of horror in California last night when a mass shooting at a child's birthday party left four people dead and ten others wounded.

The attack occurred around 6pm local time (2am GMT) at a banquet hall in Stockton, near Sacramento, where families had gathered for what should have been a joyful occasion.

Targeted Attack on Family Gathering

San Joaquin County sheriff's office spokesperson Heather Brent confirmed that both children and adults were among the victims of the shooting.

During a news conference at the scene, Ms Brent revealed that early indications strongly suggest this was a targeted incident, though the motive remains unclear.

The shooter has not been apprehended and remains at large, prompting an intensive manhunt by local authorities.

Community Leaders Express Outrage and Grief

Stockton's Vice Mayor Jason Lee expressed his devastation in a social media post, writing: "Tonight, my heart is heavy in a way that's hard to put into words. As Vice Mayor of Stockton - and as someone who grew up in this community - I am devastated and angry to learn about the mass shooting at a child's birthday party."

He added the poignant observation that "A birthday party should never be a place where families fear for their lives."

Mayor Christina Fugazzi echoed these sentiments, noting that families should be together celebrating rather than waiting anxiously in hospitals, praying for their loved ones' survival.

Appeal for Information

San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas made a direct appeal to the public during a news conference, urging anyone with information about the shooter to come forward immediately.

Addressing the perpetrator directly, Mr Freitas stated: "If you are this individual, turn yourself in immediately."

The investigation continues at the banquet hall location, which shares a parking lot with other businesses in the area.

Authorities have not released further details about the victims or potential suspects as the community reels from this devastating attack on what should have been a protected family space.
