Cold feet: could refrigerating your socks help you sleep in a heatwave?
Cold feet: could refrigerated socks help you sleep?

The British Red Cross has issued a surprising tip for staying cool during a heatwave: refrigerate your socks before bed. The advice, aimed at helping people sleep in hot weather, involves placing a pair of socks in the fridge during the day and slipping them on just before getting into bed.

Science behind the suggestion

Research indicates that cooling the feet can effectively lower the body's core temperature. Dr Allie Hare, president of the British Sleep Society, supports the idea, recommending “putting a pair of lightly damp socks in the freezer about 10 minutes before you go to bed.” This method leverages the body's heat exchange through the soles of the feet.

Practical concerns and alternatives

Some may worry about socks absorbing food odors or freezer mess. However, the Red Cross offers additional tips: sleep on the lowest level of your home (as heat rises), wear minimal clothing, turn off electrical devices that generate heat, avoid alcohol and caffeine in the evening, stay hydrated with water, and take a lukewarm or cool shower before bed. These strategies can help regulate body temperature without the need for refrigerated socks.
