Firefighters have issued a stark safety warning after a woman was dramatically rescued from a house fire in North London, which is believed to have been sparked by a cigarette that was not put out correctly.
Dramatic Midday Rescue in Stonebridge
The blaze erupted in a mid-terraced house on Stonebridge Park just before 1:00 pm yesterday. The London Fire Brigade responded with immense speed, dispatching crews from multiple stations including Park Royal, Willesden, Wembley, North Kensington, Hammersmith, and West Hampstead.
Firefighters wearing heavy-duty breathing apparatus entered the burning building and successfully rescued one woman from the property. Thankfully, five other residents managed to escape the fire and reach safety on their own.
Extensive Damage and Brigade Control
The fire caused significant damage to the converted flats before crews managed to bring it under control by 2:12 pm. A London Fire Brigade assessment revealed that the flames had torn through most of the ground floor, a section of the first floor, and a small part of the loft conversion.
Vital Safety Advice for Smokers
In the wake of the incident, a London Fire Brigade spokesperson delivered a crucial message for smokers. They emphasised that it is "absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it." Failure to do so risks a fire that could "not only destroy your home but also cost you your life."
The Brigade is urging all residents to proactively check for fire hazards in their homes by using their online Home Fire Safety Checker. This free digital tool provides personalised safety advice in just a few minutes.
How to dispose of cigarettes safely:
- Always use sturdy, non-tip ashtrays and stub cigarettes out thoroughly.
- Never leave a lit cigarette unattended.
- Avoid balancing cigarettes on ashtray edges where they can fall.
- Be extra cautious if you are tired, have been drinking, or are on medication.
- Ensure all smoking materials are cold and wet before placing them in a bin. Never use a wastepaper basket.
