Woman Loses 13 Stone to Break Family Cycle of Ill Health After Mother's Death

A routine blood pressure check became a life-changing moment for Devinia Carby, a 46-year-old council worker from Brent. Tipping the scales at nearly 25 stone, she realized she needed to break a cycle of health problems that had plagued her family for generations.

The Wake-Up Call That Changed Everything

"My mind went straight to my mum, who had high blood pressure and diabetes," Devinia explained. "She passed away in 2022 after a lifetime of illness and medical complications. I pictured my daughter, Nayla-Hope, caring for me the way I'd cared for my mum. I couldn't let that be her future."

This realization prompted Devinia to rejoin Slimming World in March 2024 with what she describes as a "clear purpose and completely different mindset." Having been a member previously without success, this time she committed fully to the program.

Transforming Habits and Health

As a single working mother of three children - Micah (25), Kyle (22), and seven-year-old Nayla-Hope - Devinia found meal preparation particularly challenging. "In the past, we relied on takeaways four nights a week," she admitted. "Being inspired by other members of my Slimming World group, I started prepping my meals in advance."

Now, each Sunday she batch cooks meals for the week ahead with her daughter. One of her most valuable tips came from fellow group members: matching meals to the weather. "On cold days, having a hot meal already planned stops me slipping off course," she noted.

Remarkable Results and Emotional Moments

Devinia's transformation has been extraordinary. She has lost 13 stone, dropping from a size 28 to a size 12. Her blood pressure has returned to normal range, and she reports sleeping much better.

One particularly emotional moment came when her daughter Nayla-Hope wrapped her arms fully around her for the first time. "Hearing her say she could finally hug me properly brought me to tears," Devinia recalled.

"Losing 13 stone hasn't just changed my life - it's transformed my heart health and given me the chance to be the strong, healthy mum I once only dreamed of," she said. "Standing here today feels like a beautiful victory."

The Wider Health Context

The scale of heart health issues across the UK is significant. Approximately 1.4 million people are living today after surviving a heart attack, while more than 170,000 people die from heart and circulatory diseases each year. Excess weight remains a major contributing factor, though research shows that even modest, steady weight loss can significantly reduce risks.

Lisa Maskell, Devinia's Slimming World Consultant, expressed immense pride in her achievement. "She's walked back into our group this time with a completely different mindset," Maskell observed. "Watching her embrace every step of her journey has been inspiring."

Expert Advice for Heart Health

Alexandra Clark, Registered Nutritionist at Slimming World, emphasized the importance of community support and evidence-based guidance. "Heart and circulatory diseases cause around a quarter of all UK deaths each year," she noted.

Clark shared five practical ways to reduce heart disease risk:

  1. Manage your weight: Losing just 5% of body weight can reduce heart disease risk
  2. Limit salt intake: Adults should consume no more than 6g of salt daily
  3. Cut down on unhealthy fats: Reduce saturated fats while increasing omega-3 sources
  4. Fill up on fibre: Include oats, beans, peas and lentils for cholesterol management
  5. Get active: Regular movement lowers risks of multiple health conditions

Dr Pauline Swift, Chair of Blood Pressure UK, added: "Half of all strokes, a third of heart disease and a high proportion of kidney disease cases are due to high blood pressure. Simple improvements in diet and lifestyle can really help keep blood pressure down."

Devinia's Transformation in Numbers

Devinia's journey demonstrates what's possible with determination and support:
