A Life-Altering Collision and Unexpected Medical Discovery
In December 2024, Daniel Fox's ordinary afternoon walk turned catastrophic when a seven-tonne van struck him at 30mph on a pedestrian crossing. The 49-year-old had just left a pub after a Christmas pint when the impact rendered him immediately unconscious, setting in motion a harrowing medical journey that would reveal an unexpected hormonal condition.
Critical Injuries and Near-Death Experience
The collision caused multiple severe injuries including collapsed lungs requiring chest drainage, severe head trauma with brain bleeding, extensive facial fractures, and numerous broken bones. Air ambulance personnel intubated Fox at the scene before transporting him to Preston Royal Hospital's critical care unit, sixty miles from his home. Doctors initially prepared to declare him deceased given the severity of his condition.
Fox remained in a medically induced coma for twelve of his twenty-six hospital days, completely unaware of his circumstances. His wife learned of the accident from police at 5pm that day, as Fox had left his phone at home during what was supposed to be a brief thirty-minute outing.
The Beard That Revealed a Hidden Problem
As Fox gradually regained consciousness, he experienced coma-related delusions and struggled to distinguish reality. Visitors remarked on his altered appearance, but his wife made a particularly puzzling observation: his typically thick beard showed only minimal growth after nearly a month in hospital.
"My face had only a few millimeters of growth after almost a month, which confused both of us," Fox recalled. The mystery deepened when a male nurse preparing him for facial reconstruction surgery five weeks post-accident commented that at least he'd already shaved, despite Fox not having touched a razor.
Testosterone Deficiency Diagnosis
The observant nurse suggested Fox have his testosterone levels checked, explaining that head trauma can affect the pituitary gland and disrupt hormone production. This insight proved crucial as Fox noticed additional symptoms during recovery, including complete loss of libido and severe mood deterioration.
"Sex simply never came to mind," Fox described. "My mood had deteriorated so badly that I didn't want to carry on. Everything I had lived for before had disappeared."
Navigating Treatment Options
After his GP advised waiting several months to see if symptoms resolved naturally, Fox grew increasingly desperate. His research led him to testosterone replacement treatment (TRT) provider Voy, where he ordered a blood test in April 2025. Results revealed critically low testosterone levels at 5.147 nmol/l, far below the normal range of 10-30 nmol/l.
Further testing confirmed even lower hormone levels, prompting Fox to begin TRT through self-administered injections. He now takes five weekly injections—three of Testosterone Cypionate and two of HCG to preserve fertility and testicular size.
Transformation Through Treatment
Within three months of starting TRT, Fox lost six percent body fat and noticed significant mood improvements. After six months, his confidence and libido returned substantially.
"The apathy that had swallowed me after the accident began to lift," Fox reported. "I feel more present now. After the accident, I wanted to be an insignificant shadow in the corner of the world. Now, I live a different existence."
Broader Implications for Men's Health
Fox emphasizes that low testosterone profoundly affects mood, strength, confidence, and identity. He advocates for greater awareness and testing, particularly given the connection between hormonal health and psychological wellbeing.
"We lose too many men to mental health problems as they feel too ashamed to talk," Fox noted. "Even if test results show low testosterone levels, it doesn't make them any less of a man. Taking action is the right thing to do."
His experience demonstrates how physical trauma can trigger hidden hormonal changes, and how proactive testing and treatment can facilitate comprehensive recovery beyond physical healing alone.
