Strictly Star John Whaite Hospitalised After 'Fatal' Car Accident
Strictly's John Whaite in hospital after car accident

Former Strictly Come Dancing finalist and Great British Bake Off champion John Whaite has been hospitalised following a serious road traffic accident that he has described as nearly fatal.

A Terrifying Ordeal on the Road

The 36-year-old television personality took to his Instagram story on Wednesday to share the harrowing details of the incident, which occurred on Tuesday night. Whaite explained that he was run over by a car, causing him to roll up the vehicle's bonnet and damage its windscreen before landing on the road.

He managed to crawl to the pavement where, he recounted, a kind stranger acted as a 'guardian angel' by covering him with a coat and staying with him until an ambulance arrived.

Doctors Credit Physical Strength for Survival

In his social media update, Whaite relayed the sobering assessment given to him by medical professionals. 'The doctors said 'thank god you’re 16 stone of muscle because it could have been fatal',' he wrote.

Reflecting on the experience, he offered a stark warning to his followers. He advised building strong muscle and core strength, and emphasised the importance of wearing visible clothing when crossing roads at night, citing that the driver was 'speeding without looking'.

Despite the severity of the collision, which he later called 'sudden and shocking', Whaite confirmed that after being 'scanned and poked and prodded' in hospital, he is now okay.

A Challenging Period for the Star

This frightening incident comes after a period of public personal challenges for Whaite. In November, he shared an emotional video with fans in which he opened up about a devastating five-year addiction to anabolic steroids.

He stated that the steroids had made him want to end his life and vowed to choose health and a simpler life moving forward. Following the axe of Channel 4's 'Steph’s Packed Lunch' in 2023, Whaite stepped back from mainstream television and joined the platform OnlyFans, which he said gave him a sense of freedom in his sexuality.

John Whaite rose to fame by winning The Great British Bake Off in 2012. He made television history in 2021 as part of Strictly Come Dancing's first all-male pairing with professional dancer Johannes Radebe, a partnership that took them to the grand final.
