Stephen O'Callaghan shares the story of Nya, his German shepherd, who has become an invaluable therapy dog for TransPennine Express (TPE). Nya, who joined Stephen as a puppy, has always had a calm and sweet temperament around people. At five years old, Stephen registered her with Pets As Therapy, an organization that brings therapy animals to hospitals, care homes, schools, and other settings to reduce stress and anxiety.
Nya's Role at TransPennine Express
Stephen works as the safeguarding and crime prevention lead for TPE. Nya accompanies him on the rail network, attending events to promote mental health support. She is TPE's registered therapy dog, the first train operator to have its own. Many people experience anxiety about traveling, and Nya helps alleviate that, as well as feelings of depression.
At one event, a woman struggling with low mood spent 20 minutes with Nya, rolling on the floor, stroking, and cuddling her. She told Stephen that the interaction helped break her negative chain of thoughts. Nya consistently puts smiles on faces, with people often remarking, 'That made my day a lot better.' She uplifts everyone around her and encourages conversation.
Nya's Celebrity Status and Tricks
Nya's wolf-like appearance draws attention wherever they go, making her something of a celebrity. Stephen has two young children, and Nya joins them on school runs. She performs impressive tricks, such as walking or running between Stephen's legs on command, spinning, rolling, and jumping up with both paws. During school presentations, an impromptu showcase of her tricks earned a round of applause.
Nya is highly food-oriented and often crosses her paws hoping that everyone they meet has a dog biscuit. Stephen always carries plenty with him. Taking Nya for walks helps Stephen switch off, keeping him grounded and reducing his own anxiety. Having served as a police officer for 20 years, Stephen was exposed to many difficult situations, which took a toll. He wanted to help others by making Nya a therapy dog.
A Strong Bond
Stephen and Nya share a strong bond, able to read each other's energy. 'It's nice to have someone miss me when I leave the room – she's like my little shadow,' Stephen says. As told to Ann Lee.
