Portuguese authorities have confirmed that a 23-year-old London student who went missing from a boat party in Lisbon has been found dead. Julian Amaral, from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, was reported missing after he allegedly fell into the Tagus River in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2.
Body recovered from Tagus River
Portugal's Maritime Police confirmed that the body of a 23-year-old man was found on Sunday, September 6, in the Tagus River near the Liscont Terminal Quay. Amaral had initially gone missing at the Alcantra Docks in Lisbon, prompting a large-scale search operation by local police.
A spokesperson for the Maritime Police said: "Following an alert received at 7:20 PM, personnel from the Lisbon Local Maritime Police Command and the Lisbon Firefighters Regiment were immediately deployed. Upon arrival at the scene, the body was recovered by firefighters, and the official confirmation of death was carried out by the health official."
Investigation and family support
After consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the body was transported to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Lisbon. The Maritime Police Psychology Unit is providing support to the victim's family, and the Lisbon Local Maritime Police Command has taken charge of the incident.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that CCTV footage shows the 23-year-old London Metropolitan student falling into the water. He was reportedly staying with a family member for the holiday and had been attending an all-white party cruising the Tagus River from Lisbon at the time of the incident.
