Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) is facing a devastating mental health crisis in Coronation Street, experiencing another terrifying hallucination involving a fellow Weatherfield resident. The young character has been deeply affected by Megan Walsh's (Beth Nixon) manipulation, after becoming the first to discover her sexual abuse of Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale). Threatened by the schoolteacher into silence, Sam's confidence plummeted, leaving him withdrawn and worrying his loved ones. He eventually revealed Megan's secret to Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) but only after collapsing and being rushed to hospital.
Even though Megan has been exposed, Sam's nightmare continues. He has faced hurtful comments from Will and grown paranoid about who to trust. His mental state spiraled further weeks ago when he began struggling to distinguish reality from delusion. Believing Will was chasing him through the street, Sam ran and tripped; when Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) helped him up, Sam saw no one behind him. In today's episode, Sam remains distant, snapping at Hope Stape (Isabella Flanagan) at school and reacting sharply to Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) at the Bistro. While walking through a ginnel, he sees Will chasing him, runs to a dead end, and fights a bin—only to realize it was another hallucination.
Producer Kate Brooks confirms the soap will explore Sam's deteriorating mental health over spring and early summer. 'Getting him across the Megan story and having him be another victim of her manipulation felt like a really interesting way of telling the story,' she explains. 'But as a result of that, his mental health has been really, really damaged by everything that’s happened – by the manipulation, by the fact that he wasn’t believed, by the fear that he felt every time he was with Megan.' Brooks adds that the storyline will show Sam's family realizing he needs urgent help, highlighting how Megan's actions have caused collateral damage beyond the Driscolls. 'People’s trust has been absolutely dismantled because of this woman’s perpetual lie.'
