Next week on Coronation Street, Abi Webster faces a parent's worst nightmare when toxic mould in her rented flat sends her young son Alfie to intensive care, ultimately forcing her to leave her home. The crisis begins with a frustrating complaint about dampness, but quickly escalates into a life-threatening health emergency.
Abi discovers the identity of her elusive landlord
While grabbing a coffee, Abi vents her frustrations, leaving yet another voicemail for her landlord about the damp. She admits she has never even learned his name because he never returns her calls. Meanwhile, romance is brewing at Speed Daal as a huge bouquet of flowers arrives for Alya from Idris, who later shows up hoping for forgiveness. Abi gets the shock of her life when she hears Idris's phone ringing and realizes he is the mystery landlord she has been desperately trying to contact.
Alfie's health deteriorates rapidly
That evening, as Abi tucks Alfie into bed, viewers see thick black mould spreading across the wall behind his bed. Soon, Alfie wakes up struggling to breathe, sending Abi into a panic. She immediately calls Kevin, who rushes them both to A&E. Watching them leave, Idris becomes concerned, unaware that the condition of the flat is about to come back to haunt him.
At the hospital, Carl also rushes to be by Abi's side as doctors assess Alfie. After initial checks, the consultant decides to keep Alfie in intensive care overnight for further tests. Meanwhile, Idris and Brody head to the flat, where they are horrified to discover the severity of the mould problem. Once Idris learns Alfie has been taken to hospital, he rushes there himself, but his arrival is not welcomed.
Doctors confirm the cause: mould
Doctors confirm every parent's worst fear: Alfie's breathing problems are a direct result of the mould in his bedroom. They advise Abi to find somewhere else to live immediately. Crushed, Abi has no choice but to pack up her life and move in with Kevin.
Back on the Street, Leanne and Alya point out that whoever sold the flat to Idris may have known about the damp all along, suggesting possible negligence. But while Idris insists on trying to put things right, Abi is not interested in excuses. After returning from the hospital, she heads to the flat to collect belongings, only to find Idris and Brody unloading paint and tools to tackle the damp. Abi is far from impressed. Instead of accepting his apology, she tells Idris she is taking him to court over the dangerous conditions that left her son seriously ill.
Suspicions and legal action
Beyond the mould drama, Abi becomes suspicious after spotting Idris and Brody acting strangely. She later warns Sally that she saw Brody forcing a man into the back of Idris's car and is convinced they were up to no good. Sally is even more uneasy when Brody contributes money towards the household, leading her to tell Tim that Idris may be leading Brody down the wrong path. Things get awkward when Brody introduces Kit to Idris, who is taken aback to discover Brody's dad is a police officer.
As the week ends, Sally encourages Abi not to let the matter drop. Determined to hold someone accountable, she suggests Abi speak to Adam Barlow about legal action. Abi and Sally soon sit down with Adam over a drink and persuade him to take on the case, setting the stage for a major legal battle.
