Six in 10 over 65s worry about catching flu in A&E
6 in 10 over 65s fear flu in A&E

A new survey has found that six in 10 people aged over 65 are already worried about catching flu during trips to accident and emergency departments, raising concerns about the pressures on the NHS this winter.

Survey reveals widespread anxiety

The poll, conducted by the charity Age UK, surveyed 1,000 people aged 65 and over. It found that 60% of respondents expressed concern about contracting flu while attending A&E. The findings come as the NHS prepares for what experts predict could be a challenging winter season, with high levels of flu and COVID-19 circulating.

According to Age UK, many older people are delaying seeking medical help due to fear of catching flu. The charity warned that this could lead to serious health consequences, as untreated conditions can worsen over time.

Impact on health-seeking behaviour

The survey also revealed that 18% of over-65s have avoided going to A&E in the past year because of flu fears. Among those with underlying health conditions, the figure rose to 25%. Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, said: “It is deeply concerning that so many older people are worried about catching flu in A&E. No one should have to choose between getting the medical help they need and protecting themselves from a potentially serious illness.”

The charity is urging the NHS to take steps to reduce the risk of flu transmission in hospital settings, such as improving ventilation and ensuring that patients are isolated appropriately.

Calls for action

Age UK is also calling for older people to get their flu jab as soon as possible. The NHS is offering free flu vaccines to over-65s, as well as to other at-risk groups. However, uptake has been lower than in previous years, with some estimates suggesting that only around 70% of eligible over-65s have been vaccinated so far.

Dr. Nikki Kanani, a GP and NHS medical director for primary care, said: “The flu vaccine is a safe and effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones. I would urge everyone eligible to come forward and get their jab as soon as possible.”

Winter pressures

The survey adds to concerns about the NHS’s ability to cope with winter pressures. A recent report from the British Medical Association warned that the health service is facing a “perfect storm” of high demand, staff shortages, and the lingering effects of the pandemic. Emergency departments are already seeing record numbers of attendances, with some hospitals reporting waits of over 12 hours.

Age UK’s Abrahams added: “The government must ensure that the NHS has the resources it needs to keep patients safe this winter. This includes adequate staffing, proper infection control measures, and clear communication with the public.”
