EastEnders' Denise removes head wrap in cancer battle

Denise Fox (Diane Parish) faces another emotional milestone in her cancer battle on EastEnders as she removes her head wrap for the first time, revealing hair loss caused by treatment. The character, diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, has been struggling with isolation in hospital, away from her loved ones.

Denise's cancer diagnosis and family impact

Denise was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, an aggressive blood cancer requiring urgent treatment. After initially distracting herself by supporting daughter Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams) following son Jordan's car accident, she broke down in the Vic and confided in her family after Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) urged her to start treatment. She told her children she would be in hospital for a month and created a rota for them to help at home.

Emotional head wrap removal scene

Upcoming episodes show Denise struggling with isolation. A nurse supports her as she emotionally removes her head wrap for the first time. The scene is described as powerful and devastating, marking a visible change in her appearance due to hair loss from treatment.

Actress Diane Parish, marking 20 years on the show, reflected on the storyline: 'There are many characters in this show and, as actors, we just tell their stories. I see it like we're chess pieces on a board and we go with whatever the creators decide is best for the show, because they're looking at the bigger picture. It's the fickle finger of fate, but that's just like life isn't it?'

Parish on Denise's journey

Parish told TV Times she feels she's had '100 different careers already from being in this show' and feels 'so grateful and proud to be a part of it'. She explained Denise delayed treatment fearing things would 'fall apart without her'. 'But now she's going to have to surrender herself to the people who are hopefully going to be able to save her life,' Parish added. 'There are ripples throughout the whole family. You see that this isn't just happening to Denise, it's happening to everyone else who loves her, too. They've all been thrown into this huge storm. I want everybody to look out for what's coming – because it's unexpected.'

Storyline speculation

Fans speculate the storyline could have a tragic end. Denise was mentioned but not seen in the flashforward episode set in 2027 earlier this year. The storyline was penned to mark her 20th anniversary on the soap.
