Emmerdale fans have been on the edge of their seats as Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) faces a prostate cancer diagnosis. In today's episode, Cain heads to the hospital for his operation, leaving viewers wondering if he will survive and whether this marks the end for the iconic character.
What Has Happened to Cain and Moira So Far This Year?
The drama began in January during the crossover event Corriedale, when Cain was rushed to hospital after being shot. While there, doctors discovered a lump that required testing for cancer. As Cain and Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) awaited results, their world was turned upside down by the reign of Celia Daniels and Ray Walters (Jaye Griffiths and Joe Absolom).
Moira found herself arrested after ID cards were found in her home, suggesting involvement in Celia's modern slavery operation. Despite protesting her innocence, Moira's history with Celia made her look guilty. Meanwhile, Ruby Miligan (Beth Cordingly) discovered the burial site of refugee Anya on Moira's farmland and called the police, leading to the discovery of two bodies—Anya's and Celia's. Moira was arrested for double murder.
While Moira was in prison, Cain received his cancer diagnosis but kept it secret, not wanting to add to her stress. In March, Cain finally broke down and told Moira everything in an emotional police station visit. Since then, Cain and his sons have moved into Wishing Well with the Dingles, and Moira has been released after new evidence proved her innocence.
Is Cain Dingle Leaving Emmerdale?
There has been no confirmation that Jeff Hordley is leaving his role as Cain Dingle. However, in soap operas, anything is possible. In today's episode, Cain's son Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn) fears the worst as his dad is wheeled into theatre. Kyle, Moira, and young Isaac (Bobby Dunsmuir) wait anxiously. A doctor later informs them that Cain's operation was a success.
While the family is relieved, Cain struggles with the side effects of the surgery, particularly the catheter. Jeff Hordley described the storyline as "the story of a man who doesn't normally talk about his feelings" and a "big love story" between Cain and Moira. He noted that the couple faces a series of obstacles that could either make or break their marriage.
As Cain adjusts to his new reality, fans will be watching closely to see how he and Moira navigate the challenges ahead. The episode airs on May 11, 2026, and is available now on ITVX.
