A devastating fire at a multi-storey shopping centre in Pakistan has resulted in the deaths of at least three people, with several others injured, according to officials.
Details of the Gul Plaza Blaze
The fire broke out at the Gul Plaza shopping centre in Karachi, Pakistan's largest southern city, shortly after 10pm local time (5pm UK time) on Saturday, 17 January 2026. Television footage from the scene showed firefighters in protective gear battling intense flames, using multiple fire engines equipped with ladders and water cannons to try and douse the building.
Thick, black smoke billowed from numerous floors of the complex and was reportedly visible from several streets away. Local media indicated that most shop owners were either closing their premises or had already left for the day when the fire ignited.
Cause and Rapid Spread of the Flames
While an official cause has not yet been determined, authorities stated the fire began in an area where shopkeepers had stored imported garments, clothing, and plastic household goods. These highly flammable materials are believed to have fuelled the flames, causing them to spread with alarming speed throughout the building.
This incident tragically highlights a persistent issue in Karachi and other parts of Pakistan. Many buildings lack adequate fire prevention and firefighting systems, a deficiency that frequently leads to significant damage and loss of life during such emergencies.
A Recurring Tragedy for the City
This is not an isolated event for Karachi. In a grim reminder of the city's vulnerability to such disasters, 10 people were killed and 22 injured in a fire at another shopping centre in November 2023.
The latest blaze at Gul Plaza serves as another urgent call for improved safety standards and infrastructure to protect citizens and prevent future catastrophes.
