Crowbar Attack at Merseyside Hospital: Five Injured After Appointment Refusal
Five injured in hospital crowbar attack in Newton-Le-Willows

A hospital in Merseyside was placed on lockdown on Tuesday after a violent attack left five people injured, with a crowbar believed to be the weapon used.

Violent Outburst Following Denied Appointment

The incident unfolded at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-Le-Willows shortly after midday on 30 December 2025. According to police reports, a 20-year-old man became increasingly agitated after his request for an appointment was refused. After being asked to leave the premises, the man's anger escalated.

He initially caused damage to a counter before allegedly producing a weapon, described by sources as a crowbar, and assaulting five people. The injured parties, all believed to be staff members, received immediate first aid from paramedics at the scene. Authorities have confirmed that none of the injuries are thought to be life-threatening.

Swift Police Response and Arrest

Merseyside Police officers responded rapidly to emergency calls reporting an aggressive male and multiple assaults. The suspect was swiftly located and detained at the hospital. He has since been formally arrested on suspicion of multiple serious offences.

The man, who is originally from Afghanistan, is being held on suspicion of:

  • Five counts of Section 18 wounding (grievous bodily harm with intent)
  • Affray
  • Criminal damage

He was transported to a police station in Merseyside, where he remains in custody for questioning. Police have advised the public to avoid the area while forensic and investigative enquiries continue at the hospital site.

Official Statements and Ongoing Support

St Helens Neighbourhood Superintendent Sarah Rotherham provided a statement on the attack. "Officers attended immediately and the male was swiftly located and arrested," she said. Superintendent Rotherham also appealed for witnesses, urging anyone who saw the incident to come forward and contact Merseyside Police.

The Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust issued a statement confirming the serious incident. "Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our staff, patients, and visitors, and we are providing full support to those affected," a Trust spokesperson said. They added that the Trust is working closely with police investigators.

The Trust also stated that direct communication would be made with any patients with upcoming appointments at Newton Hospital, as well as with the next of kin of current inpatients, to provide updates.

This remains a live police investigation, and authorities are continuing to gather evidence and information.
