Police have made an arrest following a violent incident at a Merseyside hospital which left five people injured after an assault with a weapon.

Violent Outbreak at Community Hospital

The disturbance occurred on Tuesday 30 December 2025 at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-Le-Willows. According to Merseyside Police, the incident began when a man attended the hospital in the afternoon and requested an appointment.

A police spokesperson stated that it is believed his request was declined. When he was asked to leave the premises, he became increasingly agitated. The situation then escalated rapidly, with the man allegedly damaging a counter before assaulting several people inside the hospital with a weapon, which officers described as possibly being a crowbar.

Swift Police Response and Arrest

Emergency services were called to reports of a man behaving aggressively and assaulting people. Officers attended immediately and swiftly located and arrested a 20-year-old man. Police have confirmed the suspect is originally from Afghanistan.

He has been arrested on suspicion of five counts of wounding with intent, affray, and criminal damage. The man was taken to a police station in Merseyside and remains in custody while enquiries continue.

Injuries and Ongoing Investigation

Paramedics attended the scene and provided first aid to those injured. All five victims were treated at the hospital for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

St Helens Neighbourhood Superintendent Sarah Rotherham said: "I would like to take this opportunity for anyone who witnessed this incident at the hospital to contact us with any information."

A police scene remains in place at the hospital, and members of the public are advised to avoid the area while the investigation proceeds.
