UK Woman Stranded in Saudi Arabia in Critical Need of Lung Transplant
A British spin instructor is trapped in Saudi Arabia, facing a desperate race against time to raise £110,000 for a medical evacuation flight home to receive a life-saving lung transplant. Laura Storr, 35, moved to Saudi Arabia in October 2020 to manage a fitness studio, but her life took a devastating turn in May 2022 when she was diagnosed with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.
A Serious Condition That Prevents Commercial Travel
This severe lung condition, which aggressively damages the heart, has left Laura in a critical state and unable to fly commercially due to dangerously low oxygen levels. While her work insurance covers medical costs in Saudi Arabia, it excludes the expensive medical evacuation required to bring her back to the United Kingdom.
Laura has been hospitalized in Saudi Arabia for the past three months, with her health deteriorating rapidly. She is not eligible for a lung transplant in Saudi Arabia, making an urgent return to the NHS her only hope for survival. Her family has launched a GoFundMe campaign, aiming to raise £108,600 to fund the specialized flight and medical care needed for her journey.
Family Trapped Amid Regional Conflict
Complicating matters further, Laura's parents, Freda, 62, and John, 73, flew to Saudi Arabia in early February 2026 to be with her but are now also stranded due to escalating regional tensions involving Iran. Laura's sister, Emily Storr, based in Essex, described the situation as an absolute nightmare, with the conflict causing medical evacuation prices to surge and creating additional delays.
Emily revealed that explosions have been heard near the hospital and airport, causing some medevac companies to hesitate. Laura's condition has worsened significantly; she is coughing up blood, battling a severe lung infection, and requires immediate intervention. Her consultant has emphasized that time is running out, stressing the urgency of her evacuation before it is too late.
A Desperate Plea for Help
The family remains hopeful but overwhelmed by the financial and logistical challenges. Emily expressed the emotional toll, stating she wakes up every day on edge, clinging to the belief that Laura will eventually come home. The fundraiser represents a critical lifeline, with every donation bringing them closer to securing the medical evacuation that could save Laura's life.
This heartbreaking situation underscores the vulnerabilities faced by expatriates with serious medical conditions abroad and the immense costs associated with emergency medical repatriation during times of geopolitical instability.
