15 Vet-Approved Tips for Happy, Healthy UK Pets
Vets' 15 Essential Tips for UK Pet Owners

With over half of UK adults owning a pet, including 28% with dogs and 24% with cats according to vet charity PDSA, ensuring our furry companions' health and happiness has never been more important. Professional veterinarians have shared their essential guidance for British pet owners seeking to provide the best care for their animals.

Essential Foundations for Pet Health

Rory Cowlam, a London-based vet, emphasises the importance of thorough research before bringing a pet home. "I would 100% recommend reading books and checking reputable online sources," he advises. "Build your knowledge by speaking with vets, trainers, and experienced pet owners." The source of your pet matters significantly too, with Cowlam recommending adoption from charities as the preferred option.

When it comes to nutrition, vets agree that premium food isn't always necessary, but quality matters. "Look for 'complete and balanced' on labels rather than 'complementary'," explains feline vet Jo Lewis. "Feeding complementary food alone could lead to nutritional deficiencies."

Weight Management and Exercise Essentials

Maintaining a healthy weight can add years to your pet's life, warns vet Cat Henstridge. "Studies show being overweight can take two years off dogs' lives. For both species, it predisposes them to conditions like diabetes and complicates heart disease."

Exercise requirements differ between species. "Most dogs benefit from an hour of exercise daily," says Henstridge, "but what's more important is allowing them off-lead to sniff and explore mentally." For cats, particularly indoor ones, dedicated play time is crucial. Lewis suggests cat trees and multi-level structures to replicate outdoor stimulation.

Henstridge makes a passionate plea regarding ball flingers: "Throw them in the bin. The intense, sudden movements can damage joints over time, and some dogs develop addictive behaviour towards balls."

Specialist Care and Emergency Preparedness

Dental health represents one of the top welfare concerns in pets, according to Cowlam. "It's very rare I see an animal reach double figures without needing dentistry." Establishing a brushing routine early is vital, though finger brushes may work better than traditional ones for nervous pets.

Every pet owner should maintain a basic first aid kit containing pet-safe antiseptic spray and bandaging materials. "For minor cuts or limping, give it 24 hours if the pet seems otherwise well," Cowlam suggests. "But if in doubt, always seek professional advice."

Regular checkups form the cornerstone of preventative care. "Have a relationship with your local vet," Henstridge emphasises. "Annual health checks allow professional assessment, and I love when owners come with prepared questions."

During firework season, drum'n'bass music can help anxious dogs. "The rhythm and bangs in the music help drown out fireworks," explains Henstridge. "Combine this with early exercise, feeding, and keeping curtains closed for best effect."

Above all, the vets agree that love and attention tailored to your pet's needs remains fundamental. As Lewis notes, "Cats definitely need lots of the right sort of attention, but always on the cat's terms."
