Prostate Cancer Screening Explained After Jeremy Clarkson's Diagnosis
Prostate Cancer Screening: What to Know After Clarkson's News

Television personality and Clarkson's Farm star Jeremy Clarkson announced that he is undergoing cancer treatment in the latest episodes of his series. He later shared that he received an early diagnosis of an 'aggressive cancer', and part of his treatment so far has involved surgery on the prostate.

Prostate cancer: the most common cancer in men in the UK

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. While there is no national screening programme, men over 50 can request PSA tests from their GP, and men over 45 with a family history are also eligible.

Mr Wissam Abou-Chedid, consultant urological and robotic surgeon at Nuffield Health, explained: "Race is an important risk factor, as we know that Afro Caribbean men are at an increased risk. Prostate cancer affects one in four Afro Caribbean men in their lifespan, one in eight Caucasian men, and one in 13 Asian men."

What is the PSA test?

The PSA test measures prostate-specific antigen levels in blood and requires preparation. Patients must avoid ejaculation for 48 hours beforehand and refrain from cycling or horse riding, as these can artificially elevate results.

Crucially, men do not need symptoms to request testing. "Prostate cancer at the very early stages up to the late stages is completely asymptomatic," the surgeon explained.

What happens after an elevated PSA result?

If PSA levels are elevated, patients undergo repeat testing, followed by MRI scans and potentially biopsies. Results determine whether treatment is needed or if active surveillance is sufficient.

Changes in GP examinations

GPs are now advised against routine digital rectal examinations, as many men avoid seeking help due to fear of this procedure.

Men concerned about prostate cancer are encouraged to speak to their GP about PSA testing, especially if they are over 50, over 45 with a family history, or of Afro Caribbean heritage.
