Frustrated by conventional medical dismissal, Claire turned to an unconventional source: OpenAI's ChatGPT. She typed a simple query: 'Kids develop tummy ache five days after a holiday – what could it be?' Among the chatbot's suggestions appeared a possibility her doctor hadn't considered – parasitic infection, specifically mentioning cryptosporidium, a microscopic organism measuring just 5mm in length.
Armed with this AI-generated insight, Claire returned to her GP, who remained sceptical, insisting her son would exhibit more severe symptoms if infected. Nevertheless, the doctor agreed to a stool sample test as a precaution. The results confirmed Claire's suspicions and ChatGPT's suggestion: her son had indeed contracted a parasite, most likely from contaminated swimming pool water during their holiday.
'I wouldn't normally advocate for AI and diagnoses, but in this instance, it helped us,' Claire told Metro. 'I felt so glad I checked, and that it was backed up by the results, even if the GP was highly doubtful.'
The Rising Tide of AI Health Consultations
Claire's experience reflects a growing trend, with hundreds of millions worldwide now regularly consulting AI-powered tools for health information each week. Despite ChatGPT's demonstrated ability to pass medical licensing examinations, healthcare experts emphasise these models cannot replace qualified medical professionals.
Why Patients Are Turning to Technology
Lisa Freeman, 42, represents many who see AI as relieving pressure on overstretched NHS services. 'I don't expect a doctor – especially a busy, overworked one – to be able to think of everything in a rushed phone call when they were talking to a toddler about chicken pox five minutes ago,' she explains, referencing increasingly common hours-long A&E queues and days-long GP appointment waits.
For cybersecurity advisor Bob Gourley, AI's appeal lies in its non-judgmental nature. 'I would kind of describe what was going on with my body in a clumsy way,' he says, 'and then ask for any ideas for what might be going on or for questions to ask my doctor. The most comforting thing is that it doesn't judge me about my questions. It doesn't roll its eyes or say "that's an absurd thing to worry about."'
The Empathy Algorithm
Edward Frank Morris, 33, regularly prompts ChatGPT to 'act like a medical professional' before seeking health advice. He cites a friend's experience following a heart attack hospitalisation as particularly revealing. 'My friend, in his late 70s, plugged the medical report into ChatGPT after he felt a bit disenchanted by the bed manner of the doctor,' Edward explains. 'The app, however, was empathetic, told him exactly what the report was saying, and how severe it was in a gentle way.'
Edward believes this perceived empathy makes AI particularly valuable for elderly patients. 'Having access to technology that can be kind, talk at your level, and even offer artificial comfort is huge,' he notes, 'especially when each sickness, chronic illness, or even a fall could lead you to death.'
The Limitations and Dangers of Digital Diagnosis
While AI chatbots can simplify medical jargon, suggest questions for doctors, and outline treatment plans, they're not infallible. One man reportedly required hospital treatment for an 18th-century disease after allegedly receiving dangerous dietary advice from ChatGPT.
Professor Victoria Tzortziou-Brown, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, compares AI consultation to symptom Googling. 'This isn't all bad; it's encouraging to see patients being curious about their health,' she says. 'But with AI chatbots, it's not always clear where the information is being drawn from or how accurate it is, and the results could contain content that is neither evidence-based nor trustworthy.'
When Confidence Outpaces Accuracy
Dr Becks Fisher, director of research and policy at the Nuffield Trust, observes that GPs now 'expect' patients to arrive with ChatGPT-generated information. 'It's very difficult to make broad generalisations about the accuracy of AI tools,' she cautions, 'partly because how useful they are will depend on what information the user prompts them with.'
ChatGPT's confident delivery style sometimes creates problems, as dentist Deepak Aulak has discovered. 'It can be awkward having to reset expectations when the information has been delivered so confidently online,' he explains, describing patients convinced they qualify for NHS dental implants because a chatbot told them so, despite such procedures being rarely funded.
The Professional Perspective
Interestingly, healthcare professionals are also embracing AI technology. A Royal College of General Practitioners and Nuffield Trust survey revealed more than half of GPs use AI in clinical practice, though primarily for administrative tasks like note-taking rather than clinical decision-making.
Professor Tzortziou-Brown offers the definitive medical perspective: 'An AI chatbot cannot replace a conversation with a clinician who knows the patient, understands the context and can make safe, evidence-based decisions.'
Experts unanimously agree that while AI can supplement health understanding, patients should prioritise reputable sources like NHS resources and, crucially, maintain relationships with their actual doctors rather than taking the 'GP' in ChatGPT too literally.
