A woman in her 80s has died after a car collided with shoppers in a Morrisons car park in Gosport, Hampshire. The incident occurred on Walpole Road at approximately 12:05pm on Friday, when a grey Kia Soul drove into the car park and struck two pedestrians.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A second shopper sustained minor injuries. The vehicle also collided with several other parked and moving cars, according to police reports.
Footage shows damaged car and debris
Footage shared by The News, a Portsmouth-based outlet, shows a black car with a damaged front door surrounded by debris in the car park. Local councillor Lesley Meenaghan posted photographs on Facebook showing ambulances and police cars outside the cordoned-off supermarket. She described the incident as a 'Serious Road Traffic Incident' and advised residents to 'avoid the area'.
Hampshire Constabulary has launched an appeal for witnesses, specifically asking 'anyone with relevant dash cam footage' to come forward. Police are reviewing CCTV of the incident. Morrisons declined to comment.
Police investigation underway
The force is currently investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision. Officers are examining footage from the supermarket's security cameras and are urging any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to contact them.
The second pedestrian, who sustained minor injuries, was treated at the scene. The incident has prompted a police cordon around the supermarket, with officers remaining at the site to conduct their inquiries.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased woman, pending formal identification and notification of next of kin. The investigation is ongoing, and police have asked anyone with information to come forward.
