Woman Critically Injured in Shark Attack at Sydney's Coogee Beach
Woman Critically Injured in Shark Attack at Coogee Beach

A woman in her 30s remains in critical condition after being bitten by a large shark at Coogee beach in Sydney's eastern suburbs on Saturday morning, prompting the closure of several beaches. Witnesses described the incident as shocking.

Details of the Attack

New South Wales Ambulance reported that the woman sustained serious injuries to her arm and leg and was transported by road to St Vincent's Hospital. Multiple ambulance crews provided treatment on the beach following the attack, which occurred shortly after 11am.

Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) stated that the victim was taken to hospital semi-conscious but breathing. According to NSW Police, members of the public pulled the woman from the water and administered first aid until emergency services arrived.

Police cleared nearby Coogee Oval to allow a Careflight helicopter to land, potentially for airlifting the victim, though she was eventually taken by road.

Witness Account

A regular swimmer at Coogee, who was present during the attack, recounted the events. The swimmer heard a scream followed by a shark alarm. The group observed activity about 30 meters away, with a lifesaver paddling out on a surfboard. Blood was visible in the water, and the victim was brought to shore, where bystanders carried her.

The witness noted that the woman appeared to have a bite high on her leg. The shark was seen swimming in the greenish water not far from the shore. Authorities have not yet confirmed the shark species, but Randwick Council estimated it to be 3-4 meters in length.

Beach Closures and Response

Following the incident, all beaches from Bondi to Maroubra were closed and will remain closed for at least 24 hours. Surf Life Saving NSW deployed additional drone surveillance at Bondi and Bronte beaches for the weekend. Drones were operational at 14 locations across the state but not at Coogee at the time of the attack.

NSW Ambulance set up a command post on the beach, with chaplains available to support witnesses. The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter conducted aerial surveillance of the area.

Context and Recent Incidents

Coogee beach, known for its gentle surf, is popular among locals and tourists. This attack marks the fourth serious shark incident in Sydney since September 2025. Earlier this year, three people were attacked—one fatally—at Sydney beaches within 48 hours. Additionally, two fatal attacks on spearfishers occurred in Western Australia recently.

SLSNSW Chief Executive Steve Pearce expressed condolences to the victim and her family, calling it another terrible shark incident on the coastline. He noted that while the volunteer patrol season has ended, lifesaving services including drone surveillance continue to provide safety measures.
