Michelle Neill, 55, has admitted killing her paralysed sister Kelly Neill, 48, who died from sepsis contracted from bed sores while in her care. On Wednesday, Neill pleaded guilty to gross negligence manslaughter at the Old Bailey.
Paramedics found victim in squalid conditions
Paramedics were called to the family home in Deptford, south London, on the morning of October 20 2022. They found Kelly Neill on the living room floor, non-verbal and groaning, surrounded by dirt, decay and clutter. She had been partially paralysed due to a stroke in January 2018.
Kelly was taken to St Thomas's Hospital in London and died on October 23 2022. A post-mortem examination determined the cause of death as sepsis due to multiple skin ulcers and the previous stroke.
Carer breached duty of care
The victim lived in “toxic” conditions, with her sister having taken over as sole carer after their mother's death. The court heard that Neill unlawfully killed her sister by breaching her duty of care, failing to summon medical assistance in time.
Judge Richard Marks KC adjourned sentencing for a pre-sentence report and granted Neill continued bail. Sentencing will take place at the Old Bailey on a date to be fixed.
