Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters responded to a blaze that engulfed a motorcycle shop on Camberwell Road in Walworth, forcing 30 people to evacuate nearby houses. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) received the first of 28 calls at 4.38am and mobilised crews from Peckham, Old Kent Road, Brixton and surrounding fire stations. The fire, which started on the ground floor of the shop, was under control by 7.09am.
Road closures and aerial response
Camberwell Road was closed between Grosvenor Terrace and Bethwin Road as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. The Brigade deployed one of its 32-metre turntable ladders to fight the fire from above, and the Drone Team provided the Incident Commander with an aerial view of the scene. Dramatic photos released by the LFB show fire crews hosing water onto the shop and the aftermath of the blaze.
Investigation underway
The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the LFB. No injuries have been reported. The evacuation affected 30 residents, who were able to return after the fire was brought under control.
