Trigger Point actor Eric Shango has revealed he saved a man's life at a London Underground station earlier this year, pulling him from a railway bridge as he was about to take his own life. In his first public account of the incident, Shango described the encounter as the most fearful moment he has ever experienced.
Real-life heroics mirror on-screen drama
Shango, who plays bomb disposal expert Danny Markham in the ITV crime drama, spoke exclusively to MyLondon at a Trigger Point press event. He explained that he was in the passenger seat of a friend's car when he spotted a figure standing on a railway bridge near a Tube station.
“There was actually a situation earlier this year, this is the first time I'm ever talking about it,” Shango said. “Unfortunately, a man got to his lowest, and he was about to take his own life, and he stood up on a railway bridge. We drove past him, and he caught the corner of my eye. I thought to myself 'Is that what I thought it was?' Someone was about to jump. I was in the passenger seat of my friend's car and literally shouted at them to turn back around.”
Acting on instinct in a moment of fear
Shango said he could see the man still contemplating his actions and felt an overwhelming sense of fear, worried that any hesitation could prove fatal. Despite the terror, his instinct drove him to intervene directly.
“A man was still stood there contemplating taking his own life. I remember feeling so stuck full of fear because maybe I was a second too late, he might, or if I say the wrong thing, he could,” Shango added. “But the fear took over me at one point, and I just ignored all of it, and I literally went and yanked him off the bridge and then just grabbed him. I think that is the most fearful I've ever felt because of how close it came.”
Trigger Point returns with unprecedented threat
The revelation comes as Trigger Point prepares to return to ITV for a fourth season on Sunday, August 30. The new series sees Vicky McClure's Lana Washington and her bomb disposal unit face what is described as an “unprecedented” challenge. In the latest trailer, Lana notes that the attackers seem to know how her team operates, while a chief character warns the threat is the “biggest” London has faced.
Shango reprises his role as Danny Markham, working alongside Lana as the team strives to protect the capital. The incident at the Tube station, which occurred earlier this year, has not been previously disclosed by the actor until now. The man's name has not been revealed.
