A body has been pulled from a lake in Kent after a young man vanished while swimming, becoming the latest tragedy in a week that has seen ten people die in open water during Britain’s heatwave.
Incident Details
The teenager disappeared after entering the lake on Wednesday, May 27, with police, fire, and ambulance crews attending the scene. The teenager was later pronounced dead.
In a statement, Kent Police said: 'Kent Police was called to Galley Hill Road in Swanscombe at 2.55pm on Wednesday 27 May 2026 following a report of concern for a swimmer in a pond. Officers attended along with the Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the South East Coast Ambulance Service, where the body of a teenage boy was recovered.'
His death is not being treated as suspicious at this time, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
Other Tragedies
Elsewhere, Junior Slater, 12, disappeared while swimming with friends in the River Ribble at Ribchester at around 2pm on Tuesday. Emergency services were called shortly afterwards amid reports of concern for a child in the water. Police later confirmed that a child’s body was recovered at approximately 7.50pm.
The recent spate of drownings highlights the dangers of open-water swimming, especially during hot weather when many people seek to cool off in rivers, lakes, and ponds. Authorities urge the public to be cautious and to swim only in designated areas with lifeguards present.
The heatwave continues to affect the UK, with temperatures remaining high. The open-water death toll has risen sharply, prompting renewed calls for water safety education and awareness campaigns.
