A police officer was violently assaulted after responding to reports of a car crash in the Black Country in the early hours of New Year's Day.
Early Morning Crash Leads to Assault
West Midlands Police were called to Robert Street in Lower Gornal at approximately 5.30am on January 1, 2026. The incident began with reports that a Ford Ranger had collided with a wall.
Upon arrival, officers spotted a man walking away from the scene of the crash. As they attempted to intervene, the situation escalated dramatically.
Throat Attack and Vehicle Flight
A policewoman was punched in the throat as she tried to prevent the man from getting into a nearby Range Rover, which was being driven by a second person.
The force stated that the officer was targeted as she attempted to stop the suspect from entering the vehicle. The Range Rover then sped away from the location, initiating a search.
Swift Arrests Made
Police units, including traffic officers and drone teams, coordinated a rapid response. Their efforts led them to the Swindon area of South Staffordshire, where two suspects were located.
A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and drink-driving. A 48-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Authorities confirmed that the Range Rover involved has been recovered. Fortunately, the assaulted officer did not sustain serious injuries.
