A 38-year-old man has died after being attacked by a shark at Rottnest Island, a popular holiday destination off the coast of Western Australia, near Perth. The incident occurred around 10am on Saturday, according to a spokesperson for St John WA ambulance service.
Details of the Attack
Police reported that the man was in the water at Horseshoe Reef when he was believed to have been bitten by a shark. He was transported by boat to shore at Geordie Bay on the north side of the island, where paramedics treated him, but he could not be revived.
A rescue helicopter had arrived at the island, located 19km off the coast of Fremantle, to evacuate the man to a mainland hospital, but it was too late.
Shark Sighting
Surf Life Saving WA reported that a five-metre white shark was spotted 80 metres offshore around the time of the attack. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development urged people to exercise extra caution in the Geordie Bay area.
Rottnest Island, which measures 11km long by 4.5km wide, is a popular tourist destination. WA Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
