A man has died and two others have been taken to hospital with injuries after a refuse collection vehicle lost control and smashed into a house in Leominster, Herefordshire.

The incident occurred on Bridge Street at approximately 6:40am on Tuesday morning, causing significant damage to the property and reducing the front of the lorry to a mangled wreck amidst scattered bricks and debris.

Emergency Response and Casualties

Emergency services rushed to the scene following the collision. A man in his 60s, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and another passenger from the lorry were transported to the hospital for treatment for their injuries. Police have confirmed that, fortunately, no one was inside the house at the time of the crash.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described being woken by the sound of the impact, calling it ‘absolutely horrific.’

Ongoing Investigation and Road Closures

Superintendent Helen Wain of West Mercia Police expressed the condolences of all involved agencies, stating their thoughts are with the families affected.

A cordon remains in place as the fire service and local authorities work to make the damaged building safe. Roads in the immediate area, including Mill Street, are closed and expected to remain shut for some time.

Police are urging the public to avoid the area and find alternative routes to allow emergency services to work unimpeded.

A council spokesperson echoed this sentiment, thanking the emergency services for their swift response and confirming they are working with partners to assess the situation.
