Major incident as sinkhole swallows boats in Shropshire

Emergency services declared a major incident after a large sinkhole dramatically opened up on a canal in Shropshire, swallowing multiple boats and discharging huge volumes of water.

Dramatic Rescue Operation

The incident, which saw a 50 metre-long breach in the canal, occurred in the West Midlands region. Ten people were helped to safety by emergency crews responding to the scene. According to West Mercia Police, there were thankfully no reported casualties following the sudden geological event.

Boats Left Teetering on Edge

Drone footage from the site revealed the sheer scale of the disruption, with several boats caught in the cavity. Some vessels were left precariously teetering on the edge of the steep drop into the hole, while others were stuck at the bottom of the cavity after being pulled in by the rushing water. The breach caused large volumes of canal water to flood onto the surrounding land.

Response and Ongoing Situation

The cause of the sinkhole on the Shropshire canal is now under investigation. Emergency services, including police and fire crews, worked swiftly to secure the area and ensure public safety. The declaration of a major incident underscored the severity of the situation and coordinated the multi-agency response. Authorities are now assessing the damage and working on plans to make the area safe and begin repairs.
