M20 bridge death: Tributes to Alexis Malcolm, 14, after fatal fall

Alexis Malcolm, a 14-year-old girl also known as Lexi May Marie, died in the early hours of August 22 after falling from the Teapot Lane footbridge onto the coastbound carriageway of the M20 in Aylesford, Kent. An inquest later heard that Alexis was knocked unconscious before being struck by several vehicles on the motorway. Her cause of death was given as multiple injuries.

Police response and witness appeal

Kent Police was called to the incident at 3.19am on Saturday 22 August 2026, between junctions 4 and 5 of the M20. A Kent Police spokesperson said: “Kent Police was called at 3.19am on Saturday 22 August 2026, to the incident on the coastbound carriageway between junctions 4 and 5.”

“A teenage girl who was on the carriageway in the vicinity of a footbridge near Teapot Lane, was struck by vehicles including a Ford Transit van and a Vauxhall Corsa. Patrols attended the scene and the girl was confirmed to be deceased.”

Following Alexis’s death, flowers, cards and balloons were left at the scene as friends and loved ones remembered the teenager. Tributes were also shared on social media.

Tributes and inquest proceedings

One friend wrote: “Fly high my angel.” Another said: “RIP beautiful girl, you was a good friend to all that had the privilege to know you.” A further tribute read: “Rip my beautiful girl you are so loved gone way to soon will forever miss you ... love you all of this world.”

An inquest into Alexis’s death opened at Oakwood House in Maidstone on September 2. Senior coroner Patricia Harding told the hearing: “The circumstances are that there was a fall from the M20 footbridge shortly after 3am.” The hearing was adjourned for a full inquest on February 3, 2027.

Ongoing investigation and public assistance

Kent Police previously appealed for witnesses who passed through the area between 3.15am and 3.28am on August 22 and saw a pedestrian in the carriageway. Motorists with dashcam footage were also asked to check their recordings for anything that could assist the investigation.
