The International Symposium on Emergency Response and Aeromedical Services (ISERAS) held its inaugural event in Hong Kong, marking a significant milestone for the region's emergency medical community. The symposium, which took place on November 9-10, 2023, gathered over 300 participants from 15 countries, including medical professionals, first responders, and policymakers.
Key Themes and Discussions
The event focused on enhancing collaboration and knowledge exchange in emergency response and aeromedical services. Topics included disaster preparedness, helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS), and the integration of advanced technologies such as drones and telemedicine. According to Dr. John Chan, chairman of the organizing committee, “This symposium provides a unique platform for sharing best practices and fostering international partnerships.”
Impact on Hong Kong's Emergency Services
Hong Kong's Government Flying Service (GFS) played a central role, showcasing its capabilities in aeromedical evacuation. The GFS reported that it conducted over 1,200 rescue missions in 2022, highlighting the importance of such services in a densely populated urban environment. The symposium also featured a live demonstration of a simulated mass casualty incident, coordinated with local hospitals and the Fire Services Department.
“The collaboration between different agencies is crucial for effective emergency response,” said Chief Fire Officer Lee Ka-kit. “Events like ISERAS help us refine our protocols and adopt innovations from around the world.”
Future Outlook
Organizers announced that ISERAS will become an annual event, with the next edition planned for 2024 in Singapore. The success of the Hong Kong debut underscores the growing importance of aeromedical services in global healthcare systems.
