Two individuals have been charged in connection with the discovery of a child's body at a property in Southend, Essex. The charges include preventing a lawful and decent burial, according to Essex Police.
Arrests and Charges
Sophie Dean, 31, of Kenway, and James Thorpe, 32, of Shoeburyness, were arrested after officers responded to concerns raised by social services on August 7. The police attended an address in Kenway and found the body of a child. Both have been charged with preventing a lawful and decent burial of a dead body between July 3, 2025, and August 6, 2026. Thorpe has also been charged with obstruction of a constable in the execution of their duty.
The child's identity has not been released, and the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation. The force stated that detectives from its crime and public protection command are leading the inquiry.
Court Appearance and Remand
The pair appeared at Southend-on-Sea Magistrates' Court on Monday and were remanded in custody. They are scheduled to next appear at Basildon Crown Court on September 7. The investigation into the child's death is ongoing, and police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
In a press release, Essex Police said: 'We would also encourage anyone with information that could assist us and who has not yet spoken to us to please come forward and do so.'
The case has drawn attention to the importance of safeguarding children and the legal obligations surrounding the handling of deceased individuals. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the child or the nature of the alleged offenses.
