An elderly man has been dramatically freed after enduring two decades of confinement in a windowless basement under what authorities describe as inhumane conditions in Finland's capital city.
Shocking Discovery in Helsinki Villa
Helsinki Police made the disturbing discovery on Monday during a search of a detached villa in the northern part of the city. Officers found the 80-year-old victim living in a basement room that lacked windows, toilet facilities, and cooking equipment, creating what investigators termed a complete absence of hygiene possibilities.
The man, whose identity remains protected, was described as being in urgent need of immediate assistance and has since been transferred to healthcare professionals for comprehensive medical care and support.
Two Decades of Confinement
According to information from Finnish national broadcaster Yle, local authorities believe the elderly man may have been living in these appalling conditions for approximately twenty years. Detective Inspector Jari Korkalainen, who is leading the investigation, revealed that the victim had voluntarily moved into the property more than two decades ago, but his health had significantly deteriorated during his prolonged confinement.
"We're examining the relationships between the people living in the house and other individuals," Korkalainen explained. "Our investigation focuses on how the victim ended up in this situation and how he could have survived in such poor conditions for such an extended period."
Human Trafficking Investigation Launched
The discovery prompted Helsinki Police to initiate a formal investigation into potential human trafficking offences, amid concerns that the perpetrators may have exploited the man's vulnerable position for financial gain. Local newspaper Iltalehti reported that police suspect the degrading conditions may have been maintained for potential economic benefit.
Three individuals—two men and a woman, all in their sixties—were initially arrested in connection with the incident but have since been released from custody. Korkalainen clarified that while the suspects have known the victim for a considerable time, they are not related to him.
