Lesley Urbach, a British actress whose career spanned over six decades, has died at the age of 88. She was renowned for her versatility across stage and screen, and for being one of the first actresses to openly discuss the challenges of balancing career and family.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Born in London in 1938, Urbach began acting at a young age, training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). She made her professional debut in the West End in the late 1950s, quickly gaining recognition for her performances in classical and contemporary plays.
Her television career took off in the 1960s with appearances in popular series such as The Avengers and Doctor Who. She later became a familiar face on British television, starring in numerous dramas and sitcoms throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
Breaking Barriers and Advocacy
Urbach was also a trailblazer off-screen, advocating for better representation of women in the arts. In a 1985 interview with The Stage, she said: "Actresses are often pigeonholed, but I've always fought against that. We need more complex roles for women, and I'm proud to have played a part in opening doors."
She was a founding member of the Women's Theatre Group in 1970, which aimed to promote female playwrights and directors. Her efforts were instrumental in bringing feminist issues to the stage.
Later Years and Legacy
In her later years, Urbach continued to act, appearing in films such as Naked (1993) and Vera Drake (2004). She also taught drama at several universities, inspiring a new generation of performers.
Urbach is survived by her two children and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden, on September 15.
