Emergency services were called to Birth Road, Highgate, at approximately 8:10am on Thursday, September 24, following reports of a serious collision. Upon arrival, they found a 16-year-old girl who had been struck by a car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, a 68-year-old man, remained at the scene and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of death by careless driving. He has been taken into custody. Police confirmed he did not sustain any injuries.
Police and Ambulance Response
The Metropolitan Police received a call at 8:13am regarding the collision on North Road, Hornsey. Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade, and London Air Ambulance. The London Ambulance Service reported that they sent an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars, an incident response officer, a motorcycle responder, and an advanced paramedic. London's Air Ambulance was also dispatched.
A Met Police spokesperson said: "On Thursday, September 24, at 8.13am police were called to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and car on Northroad, Hornsey. Officers attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and London Air Ambulance. The pedestrian, a 16-year-old girl, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Her next-of-kin has been informed and is being supported by officers at this difficult time."
The spokesperson added: "The driver of the car, a 68-year-old man, did not sustain any injuries and remained at the scene. He has since been arrested on suspicion of death by careless driving and taken to custody. Road closures remain in place, and people are asked to avoid the area. Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information that may assist police is asked to call 101 quoting CAD1525/24Sept."
School and Community Impact
It is not yet known which school the girl attended. A staff member at St Michael's Church of England Primary School confirmed to MyLondon that no child from that school was affected.
Photos shared online show police cordoned off multiple roads in the area. The closure has been in place for over five hours.
Road Closures and Diversions
North Road is currently closed in both directions between Hampstead Lane and Broadlands Road. London bus routes 143, 263, and 603 are on diversion. Passengers using these services are advised to plan their journeys using TfL's journey planning tool.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 8:11am today (September 24) to reports of a road traffic collision on North Road, Highgate. We sent an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars, an incident response officer, a motorcycle responder and an advanced paramedic. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance. We treated a teenager, but very sadly, despite our best efforts, she died at the scene."
