A nine-year-old boy in eastern France has been hospitalized with severe physical deterioration after being discovered locked inside his father's van for nearly 500 days. Police in the village of Hagenbach, located near the borders of Switzerland and Germany, responded to a neighbor's report on Monday after hearing what sounded like a child coming from a parked van. Upon investigation, officers found the boy lying in a fetal position, naked, covered by a blanket on top of a mound of trash and near excrement.
Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz stated that the child had been confined to a sitting position inside the vehicle for so long that he has completely lost the ability to walk. Father's Alleged Motive and Contradictory Evidence
The boy's father, who has been detained in custody, allegedly told investigators he placed his son in the van in November 2024 "to protect him" because his partner wanted to send the child to a psychiatric hospital. However, Prosecutor Heitz revealed there are no medical records indicating the boy had any psychiatric problems, and school records actually show he maintained good academic performance before his disappearance.
The boy himself told investigators he had "big difficulties" with his father's partner and believed he "had no choice" but to lock him up. He also disclosed that he hadn't showered since 2024, highlighting the extreme neglect he endured during his confinement.

The father has been handed preliminary kidnapping charges along with other serious offenses and remains in custody.
