MAFS UK Relationship Coach Mel Schilling Loses Cancer Battle at 54
The reality television world is mourning the loss of Married At First Sight UK star Mel Schilling, who passed away on Tuesday at age 54 after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. The beloved relationship coach and mother-of-one died surrounded by her family, according to her husband Gareth Brisbane.
"Surrounded by Love" in Final Moments
In an emotional Instagram post, Brisbane shared that his wife passed away peacefully while "surrounded by love." He revealed that in her final moments, despite being weakened by cancer, Schilling whispered a profound message for him and their daughter Maddie that he described as sustaining.
"It took all of her remaining strength, and that gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly," Brisbane wrote. "Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me. This is a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42 - and nailed both."
A Courageous Two-Year Fight
Brisbane detailed his wife's remarkable resilience throughout her illness, noting that "through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, she never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy." Remarkably, she never missed a day of filming despite her treatments.
Earlier this month, Schilling had revealed on Instagram that her cancer had spread to the left side of her brain and that doctors had exhausted treatment options. During her time filming for the show, she underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Tributes from Television Industry
CPL Productions, the company behind Married at First Sight UK, expressed deep sadness at the loss of their "beloved friend and colleague." In a statement, they noted that Schilling went "far beyond being just a fantastic on-screen presenter" and was a friend to many at the production company.
Channel 4, which broadcasts the popular dating show, described Schilling as someone who "radiated joy, warmth and optimism." The network praised her work as being "at the heart of Married at First Sight's phenomenal success" in both the UK and Australia, reflecting her "fierce advocacy for other women" and passion for healthy relationships.
Colleagues and Co-Stars React
Alison Hammond, co-presenter of The Great British Bake Off on Channel 4, called Schilling's death a "massive loss" on social media. Jay Howard, who appeared on Married At First Sight UK in 2023, described Schilling as a "truly incredible woman" and the news as "absolutely heartbreaking."
The Siddiqui family from Gogglebox also expressed their sorrow, calling the news "just heartbreaking." Schilling had recently announced she would be stepping back from the Australian version of Married At First Sight after 12 seasons on the expert panel.
Brisbane concluded his tribute by distinguishing between the public figure and the private woman: "To most of you, she was Mel Schilling - matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate."
