Kylie Minogue Reveals Second Cancer Diagnosis in 2021

Kylie Minogue has disclosed that she was diagnosed with cancer for a second time in early 2021, following her initial battle with breast cancer in 2005. The pop superstar shared this previously private information in her new Netflix documentary, titled Kylie, which premiered today.

Second Diagnosis and Private Struggle

In the documentary, Minogue explains, “My second cancer diagnosis was in early 2021. I was able to keep that to myself … Not like the first time.” She adds, “Thankfully, I got through it. Again. And all is well. Hey, who knows what’s around the corner, but pop music nurtures me … my passion for music is greater than ever.”

Minogue admitted she struggled to find the right moment to go public, even after the massive success of her Grammy-winning 2023 single Padam Padam. “I don’t feel obliged to tell the world, and actually I just couldn’t at the time because I was just a shell of a person,” she says. “I didn’t want to leave the house again at one point. Padam Padam opened so many doors for me but on the inside I knew that cancer wasn’t just a blip in my life.”

Music as a Reflection

Her 2023 song Story from the album Tension touches on this period, with lyrics like “I had a secret that I kept to myself … Turn another page, baby take the stage.” Minogue notes, “I needed to have something that marked that time.”

In promotional materials, Minogue emphasizes the importance of early detection. “There will be someone out there who will benefit from a gentle reminder to do their check ups … Early detection was very helpful and I am so grateful to be able to say that I am well today.”

Past Battle and Public Support

Minogue, now 57, was 36 when first diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2005. She cancelled her Showgirl tour and withdrew from her Glastonbury headline slot to undergo treatment in Melbourne. Support came from Elton John, fellow survivor Delta Goodrem, and then-Prime Minister John Howard. However, intrusive media attention led to warnings from Victorian Premier Steve Bracks about privacy laws.

After treatment, she was given the all-clear. In 2008, she revealed a misdiagnosis: “My message to all of you and everyone at home is, because someone is in a white coat and using big medical instruments, doesn’t necessarily mean they’re right … I am in the very best of hands now, but it is a fact that my initial diagnosis was that I was alright, and had nothing to worry about.”

Career Resurgence

Minogue returned with the 2007 album X, producing UK Top 10 singles like 2 Hearts, Wow, and In My Arms. She finally performed at Glastonbury in 2019, earning a five-star review. The success of Padam Padam won a Grammy for best pop dance recording. In 2025, she achieved a Christmas No. 1 with Xmas and topped the album charts, tying with David Bowie and Eminem.

Documentary Details

The three-part documentary is directed by Michael Harte, known for editing the David Beckham series. It features interviews with sister Dannii Minogue, Jason Donovan, and Nick Cave. Minogue encourages others: “There are so many people for whom cancer is part of their life … check-ups are incredibly important. It can be daunting but please be mindful of just how vital they are - and reach out for help if you need it, you’re not alone.”
