Woman's Itching Nightmare Revealed as Hodgkin's Lymphoma After Year of Dismissal

For 11 agonizing months, Sumbul Ari faced relentless itching, extreme fatigue, and intense night sweats, only to be repeatedly told by medical professionals that nothing was wrong. The 26-year-old event content creator from Cairns in Queensland, Australia, describes a harrowing journey that began in April 2025 with an itchy sensation so severe she would scratch herself with sharp objects until she bled.

Symptoms Escalate and Are Repeatedly Dismissed

Initially, Sumbul experienced fluctuations in body temperature, which she brushed off, even moving rooms thinking her air-conditioning was broken. The itching persisted, leading to blood on her sheets from scratching in her sleep, with her feet being the worst affected. Over time, new symptoms emerged: loss of energy, appetite, recurrent infections, and an unabating cough. Despite her concerns, doctors dismissed her repeatedly, suggesting adjustments to her skin care routine, treating her for a yeast infection, or diagnosing scabies and eczema.

Sumbul recalls, 'He told me to moisturise because we live in a hot, humid climate. He said it was just dry skin.' After multiple stool and blood tests showed only borderline anemia, she felt unheard and turned to alternative treatments, including a parasite cleanse and naturopathy, which provided only temporary relief.

Turning Point: Discovery of a Lump

The watershed moment came when Sumbul discovered a lump on her neck. After googling symptoms, lymphoma came up, prompting her to rush to the doctor in tears, pleading to be taken seriously. This time, medical professionals found multiple swollen lymph nodes and referred her for an urgent ultrasound. Within hours, scan results revealed abnormal and enlarged lymph nodes, leading to an emergency department visit where doctors identified lymph nodes on her chest, neck, and spleen.

Less than a week later, she underwent a biopsy, PET scan, and heart scan. On March 17, 2026, nearly a year after her symptoms began, Sumbul was diagnosed with Stage 2-3 Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Relief and Anger Amid Diagnosis

Her initial reaction was relief at finally having answers. 'I didn't have to itch myself to death anymore,' she says. However, anger surfaced as she reflected on months of being dismissed by doctors, describing the feeling of being unheard as the 'worst feeling.' Since starting chemotherapy, her symptoms have improved dramatically; the itching stopped completely after her first treatment, allowing her a full night's rest for the first time in months.

Looking Forward with Hope

Despite the challenges ahead, Sumbul remains hopeful. She aims to complete a full Ironman before turning 30, viewing her diagnosis as a minor setback for a major comeback. 'Life is too short to sweat the small stuff. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed, so just take it one day at a time,' she concludes, emphasizing resilience and positivity in the face of adversity.
