A Mother's Heartbreak: From Holiday Joy to Unimaginable Loss
In August 2024, Marie Fellows and her husband Dave faced every parent's worst nightmare when their 10-year-old daughter Larissa passed away from leukaemia during a family holiday in the United States. The tragedy unfolded rapidly, leaving the family in shock and grief, but it has since inspired a mission to help others through The Larissa Foundation.
The Beginning of a Nightmare
The family, including two teenage boys, embarked on a holiday that started on the West Coast, where Larissa experienced intermittent sickness and headaches. Initially dismissed by a doctor as hormonal or due to heat and time zone changes, the symptoms seemed minor. They then flew to New York for a Caribbean cruise with friends, unaware of the impending horror.
During the cruise, Larissa complained of feeling "a bit funny" at a beach club, with aching legs that required her father to carry her back to the boat. That night, her condition deteriorated dramatically: she became delirious, singing and speaking incoherently, before suffering a seizure. Rushed to the medical centre, she was placed in a medically-induced coma and urgently transported to New York by speedboat.
The Devastating Diagnosis
Upon arrival in New York around 3:00am, Larissa was met by a team of doctors, but hope quickly faded. A CT scan revealed the severity of her condition, and doctors delivered the crushing news that nothing could be done. Despite begging for a second opinion, neurological tests confirmed the worst: Larissa would likely never walk or talk again, with minimal responsiveness at best.
Faced with an impossible decision, the family, including Larissa's brothers, unanimously agreed to turn off her life support. They gathered by her bed, held hands, played "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," and watched as she passed away almost instantly. The only solace was the certainty that there had been no chance of recovery.
Finding Purpose in Grief
For weeks, the cause of Larissa's death remained unexplained until a post-mortem in October identified it as leukaemia, the most common childhood cancer. In the aftermath, Marie found support from charities like SUDC UK, but it was a dream that spurred her to action. In the dream, Larissa urged her mother to help save others, leading to the establishment of The Larissa Foundation.
The foundation raises awareness and funds for bereavement services, children's hospitals, leukaemia research, and blood cancer support. It has become a beacon of hope for the family, channeling their grief into positive action to keep Larissa's memory alive and assist other families facing similar tragedies.
Moving Forward with Strength
The months following Larissa's death were marked by profound grief, with Marie and Dave taking turns to support each other and their sons. Through the foundation, they have found a way to honor Larissa's joyful spirit and ensure her name is never forgotten. Today, they continue to grow the foundation, dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others while navigating the ongoing pain of loss.
This story underscores the sudden and devastating impact of childhood leukaemia, highlighting the importance of awareness, early detection, and support for affected families. The Larissa Foundation stands as a testament to love and resilience in the face of unimaginable sorrow.
