Girl's Miraculous Survival After Kidney Failure and Cancer Diagnosis
Jennifer McNeill, a 43-year-old mother from Barking in east London, has witnessed her daughter Bay, now nine years old, defy overwhelming medical odds time and again. Bay's health struggles began at just two years old, leading to a kidney transplant and a subsequent bowel cancer diagnosis, yet she has emerged as a beacon of resilience and hope.
A Mother's Instinct and a Life-Saving Blood Test
In February 2018, Bay developed symptoms that initially seemed like a common virus. Jennifer, trusting her maternal intuition, took Bay to the emergency department multiple times, only to be told it was likely a viral infection. However, after three weeks, Bay's condition deteriorated dramatically, with paleness, vomiting, and balance issues appearing.
During what was nearly their departure from the hospital, a doctor decided to conduct a last-minute blood test. The results revealed critically high potassium levels, indicating acute kidney failure. Jennifer recalls the moment with vivid clarity, describing her utter disbelief as doctors rushed Bay into resuscitation, stating she might not survive the night.
"That one doctor one million per cent saved her life," Jennifer emphasizes, reflecting on the pivotal decision that prevented a tragic outcome.
The Transplant Journey and Unexpected Complications
Bay was immediately transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London, where she was placed in a coma and began dialysis. Jennifer, who had previously donated a kidney to her own mother, could not be a donor for Bay. Fortunately, her identical twin sister, Mimi, volunteered without hesitation to donate her kidney.
After three months of hospitalization and three years of home dialysis, Bay received Mimi's kidney in August 2021. The transplant initially appeared successful, with Bay showing immediate improvement. However, complications arose when damage to her lymphatic system during surgery led to a prolonged hospital stay until December 2021.
"Bay being Bay, she did beat the odds again," Jennifer says, describing the terrifying uncertainty they faced during this period.
A New Battle: Bowel Cancer Diagnosis
Following her recovery, Bay enjoyed a period of relative normalcy, participating in homeschooling and activities like Brownies and chess club. However, in early 2024, alarming symptoms resurfaced, including blood in her stool and irregular blood tests. Investigations revealed a mass in her bowel, leading to a diagnosis of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD), a rare lymphoma linked to Epstein-Barr virus in immunocompromised patients.
Doctors initially prescribed a cautious chemotherapy and immunotherapy regimen due to Bay's fragile state, but when this proved ineffective, they opted for a more aggressive treatment plan. Jennifer supported this decision fully, despite the risks involved.
"The protocol they followed, they've only used it, I think, nine times in 20-plus years," Jennifer notes, underscoring the rarity and complexity of Bay's case.
Remission and the Role of Charity Support
In November 2025, a PET scan confirmed Bay was cancer-free, marking a monumental victory in her health journey. She now requires biannual scans to monitor for relapse, but Jennifer emphasizes living in the present and embracing life fully.
Throughout Bay's ordeals, the charity Spread a Smile provided invaluable support, offering joy and normalcy through in-person and virtual visits from entertainers. Jennifer expresses profound gratitude for the charity's impact, highlighting how it gave Bay opportunities to socialize safely with other children facing similar challenges.
"We are just completely going to grab life with both hands," Jennifer declares, reflecting on the hard-won appreciation for every moment.
Bay continues to be homeschooled and remains active in her extracurricular pursuits, supported by her family and the Spread a Smile community. Her story stands as a testament to medical perseverance, familial love, and the power of charitable organizations in transforming difficult journeys into stories of hope and survival.
