Beverley Callard Opens Up About 'Weird' Cancer Update Amid Treatment
Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard has shared an emotional update regarding her ongoing battle with breast cancer, describing the latest development in her treatment journey as "weird" while trying to remain brave. The 69-year-old actress, best known for her iconic role as Liz McDonald in the long-running ITV soap, revealed she's been asked to attend a meeting with another consultant about her test results.
Cancer Diagnosis During New Role
Earlier this year, Beverley disclosed her breast cancer diagnosis, which came at a particularly challenging time. She had recently relocated to Dublin to begin filming for the Irish soap Fair City when she received the devastating news. "I'd had some tests just before I left the UK," Beverley explained during an appearance on RTÉ's The Late Late Show. "I was in my dressing room at Fair City, getting ready to go on, and I was quite nervous and thinking, 'I hope everybody thinks I'm all right,' and my consultant rang me and said, 'You've got to come back to the UK.'"
The timing was particularly difficult, with Beverley noting she heard about her diagnosis "literally 15 to 20 minutes before" filming her first scenes for the new show. Despite the shocking news, she continued with her professional commitments while beginning her cancer treatment journey.
Treatment and Recovery Journey
Since her diagnosis, Beverley has been transparent about her medical journey, documenting her experiences including an operation to remove lymph nodes and her subsequent recovery. Her openness has earned her widespread praise from fans and colleagues alike, with many commending her for shedding light on the real experiences women face after a breast cancer diagnosis.
"I'm absolutely fine," Beverley has maintained throughout her treatment, though she acknowledged that "my head was a bit mashed for the first few days" following the diagnosis.
Latest Update Creates Anxiety
This week, Beverley returned to Instagram to share her latest update with followers, appearing visibly anxious in a video message. She revealed that instead of receiving a phone call with her test results as expected, she's been asked to attend a meeting with another consultant.
"I don't know what that means," Beverley confessed in the video. "I'm sort of like, okay, I just thought the nurse was going to ring. I spoke to one of the cancer nurses last week, she was great, and she said we'll ring you as soon as we know anything."
The uncertainty has created understandable anxiety for the actress, who questioned why she hasn't received a phone call yet. "Why have they not rung me yet? Am I mistaken? I don't know, but I'll know more on Thursday at 12," she shared, adding that she wasn't initially planning to tell her husband John about the development.
Overwhelming Support from Followers
Beverley's update has prompted an outpouring of support from her followers, many of whom have shared their own experiences and offered reassurance. One Instagram user wrote: "Sending lots of love and will be thinking of you on Thursday. It's all just worrying, which isn't fair on anyone going through it. But it could just be your next steps."
Another supporter shared: "I think they often want to talk things through...please don't worry...it's good they want to see you to explain everything and you can ask them any questions, or discuss any worries you may have."
Several followers who have undergone similar experiences noted that in-person consultations for results are sometimes standard practice, with one sharing: "I had my treatment at NNUH & I had to have a consultation to get my results too. I think it's standard practice there. It was good news for me that they'd got it all with good margins."
Continuing Professional Work
Despite her health challenges, Beverley continues her professional career. She's currently appearing in the latest series of I'm A Celebrity: South Africa, which features stars from past series competing to become a true legend of the show. She stars alongside other celebrities including Scarlett Moffatt, Seann Walsh, and Gemma Collins.
Throughout her cancer journey, Beverley has emphasized maintaining a positive mentality, stating that this approach "helps more than anything" during difficult times. Her willingness to share both the medical and emotional aspects of her experience has created a supportive community around her as she navigates this challenging period in her life.
