Justin Timberlake's DWI Arrest Video Released Despite Legal Challenge

Video footage documenting Justin Timberlake's 2024 arrest for driving while impaired in New York's Hamptons has been made public, revealing the pop star's difficulties with field sobriety tests and his interactions with police officers. The release comes after Timberlake's legal team initially sought to block the video's disclosure, arguing it would violate his privacy and damage his reputation.

The Traffic Stop and Sobriety Tests

According to the approximately eight-hour video released by Sag Harbor police, officers pulled over Timberlake in June 2024 after observing him run a stop sign in the village center and veer out of his lane. Police reported smelling alcohol when the *NSync singer turned solo artist and actor exited his BMW vehicle.

During the encounter, Timberlake informed officers he had consumed one martini and was following friends home in the affluent beach community located about 100 miles east of New York City. When asked why he was in town, Timberlake responded, "I'm on a world tour," and after some hesitation added, "World tour. I'm Justin Timberlake."

The footage shows officers administering standard field sobriety tests, including requiring Timberlake to walk heel-to-toe in a straight line and stand on one leg. At one point, Timberlake tells the officers, "These are, like, really hard tests," and later expresses nervousness, saying his heart is racing.

Legal Proceedings and Release Agreement

Timberlake's lawyers had filed a lawsuit to prevent the video's release, claiming it would "devastate" his privacy by revealing "intimate, highly personal, and sensitive details" and cause "severe and irreparable harm" to his reputation through public ridicule. However, in a joint filing with Sag Harbor village officials on Friday, Timberlake's legal team acknowledged the video "does not constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy" under New York's public information law and agreed to its release.

Sag Harbor officials stated they were pleased the matter was resolved and emphasized their commitment to complying with state public records law. Village attorney Vincent Toomey explained that police department materials are routinely reviewed and redacted to address public safety concerns and personal privacy considerations.

Case Resolution and Consequences

Timberlake pleaded guilty to impaired driving in September 2024, approximately three months after the arrest. As part of a plea agreement that reduced his initial misdemeanor charge to a noncriminal traffic violation, the Tennessee-born entertainer agreed to:

  • Record a public safety announcement warning against the dangers of drunken driving
  • Pay a $500 fine
  • Complete 25 hours of community service
  • Accept a 90-day suspension of his driver's license

During the arrest footage, a woman who had been out with Timberlake and her husband that evening arrived at the scene and unsuccessfully attempted to give the Grammy-winning artist his cellphone. When she realized he was being taken into custody, she exclaimed, "You're arresting Justin Timberlake right now?" and later referenced his musical hits, saying, "Can you guys please just do me a favor because you loved Bye Bye Bye or Sexyback? Do me one favor!"

In the police car and at the station, Timberlake expressed surprise about being held overnight, telling officers, "I'm going to be here all night? You guys are wild, man," and requesting they keep the light on in his cell. The Associated Press was among several media outlets that filed records requests seeking the video's release.
